Pollarding

Tree pollarding is a pruning technique aimed at stimulating the growth of dense foliage and branches by removing the upper branches of a tree. This process involves pruning all the limbs and branches until they are reduced to stubs, thus controlling the tree's size and shape for design purposes or to better suit its environment.

Essentially, pollarding results in the removal of all branches and most limbs, leaving only the trunk or a basic framework of major limbs. After pollarding, the tree is given time to regrow before the process is repeated. Historically, this method was utilised to protect new shoots and growth from browsing animals in woodland environments.
